Donuts Make Your Brown Eyes Blue

Actually, we always thought Crystal Gayle was singing about “donuts” when she performed the song “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.”
That’s what they call a mondegreen – when you mishear or misinterpret a phrase in poem or lyric in a song. Gayle’s “Don’t it” DOES kind of sound a lot like “Donut.” And this blog post is about those tasty crullers you’ll find everywhere in the world from Japan (filled with bean paste) to Finland (covered with vanilla sauce).
But before I get to the Atrium’s new donut recipe, let’s talk a little about the Death of Lady Mondegreen.
The term mondegreen was originally coined by author Sylvia Wright, and has come to be quite widely used. As a child, Wright heard the lyrics of The Bonny Earl of Murray (a Scottish ballad) as:
Ye highlands and ye lowlands
Oh where hae you been?
Thou hae slay the Earl of Murray
And Lady Mondegreen
It eventually transpired that Lady Mondegreen existed only in the mind of Sylvia Wright, for the actual lyrics said that they “slay the Earl of Murray and laid him on the green.” And to this day Lady Mondegreen lives on in our mishearings.
Back to our donuts. After a little trial and error, we’ve started serving our guests freshly baked (they’re healthier we think), with pure chocolate and maple toppings, along with a selection of sprinkles you can add yourself.
If not blue, the donuts are sure to put a little sparkle in your eyes.

“We really enjoyed our stay in the Garden Room at The Atrium. The room was nicely done, with wicker furniture and a cozy little seating area by the window. … The Atrium is very close to Glass Beach and a great boardwalk/walking path and is convenient to many coastal attractions, notably the Mendocino Botanical Gardens. We also enjoyed meeting Gracie, the very friendly dog! The Atrium is a real find—a well-run, comfortable establishment at a most reasonable price.” —11/14/11
